Greece: The best place to retire in 2026
13 Jan 2026
According to the Annual Global Retirement Index report Greece is named the world’s number one retirement destination. | The report highlights the climate, healthcare and housing options and costs.
Greece has been named the world’s best retirement destination for 2026 and it’s the first time Greece has taken the top position. This marks a change from Spain and Portugal which have been long-favorites. The main factors for this are the affordable healthcare, the housing costs even by the sea, the climate and the human touch. Additionally, the ranking evaluates the destinations using input and data across categories such as visas, cost of living, integration, health care, and housing. As the executive editor of International Living, Jennifer Stevens, said in a statement, “Greece now offers what many are seeking, a beautiful, welcoming, and affordable European base with accessible residency options and a lifestyle that feels rich in every sense.”
The climate and weather conditions of Greece with more than 300 days of sunshine per year make living outdoors an actual option. People can spend more time in the nature endorsing all kind of activities such as hiking, swimming, gardening, etc. The hot and humid summers and the mild winters are ideal for those looking for predictable year-round living. Moreover the diverse landscapes from amazing coasts to rugged mountains offer different sceneries to live and enjoy daily life.

The cost of living is another advantage of Greece compared to what it offers. Rents of houses even with sea views are approachable and as the Index mentions “renting a three-bedroom home with sea views would run €800–€1,000/month. A modest two-bedroom goes for €600–€800, and on the mainland, good rentals can be found for €300–€600”. Also, dining outside can be on budget as well as the groceries including fresh vegetables and fruits. Only gas is more expensive in Greece but you drive less…
The healthcare is also a benefit since all people are admitted to public hospitals in case of emergencies. Additionally, private healthcare is good offering various programs for all kind of needs and ages. Also most doctors here have a strong command of English and take time to get to know the patients.
Obtaining residency is quite simple with various alternatives. Retirees usually apply for the Financially Independent Person permit, while property buyers typically seek the Golden Visa. Remote workers have the option of a Digital Nomad Visa. It is not necessary to own a home in order to live here, but many choose to do so because the Golden Visa process is relatively uncomplicated and comes with many benefits, including visa-free access to most of Europe.
According to the ranking by International Living, these are the ten best countries in the world to retire in 2026:
